MARRIAGE LICENCES

You can obtain a marriage licence from Town Hall, 80 Gore Street East, Perth, Ontario, K7H 1H9.

Apply for the marriage licence in person. Make sure you and your partner bring identification, such as a birth certificate (along with any change of name certificates), current passport, Record of Immigrant Landing or Canadian citizenship card, along with photo identification. Each party requires two pieces of ID: A piece of photo identification, as well as either a Birth Certificate or valid Passport.

The fee for purchasing a marriage licence is $100 (subject to change). Please be aware that Town Hall accepts cash payments only.

The marriage licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for three months from the date of purchase.

Please note the Town of Perth offers two service types for the processing of Marriage Licences:

Standard Service:

  • $100.00 cash for the marriage licence. (cash only; cheques, debit and credit cards are not accepted)
  • An appointment will be scheduled following a 48-hour period to allow a Registrar to process the application.
  • Upon return, the specified party will review the typed Certificate for accuracy, and sign the completed document.
  • Express Service:

  • $150 cash for express processing of the marriage licence.
  • The application and all supporting documentation must be presented before 3:00pm for same-day issuing. 
  • After 3:00pm, the licence will be available at an agreed upon time during the next business day.
  • The Registration of the Marriage

    After the marriage, the marrying couple may receive a "Record of Solemnization of Marriage.” This document includes the couple’s names, the date of the marriage, the names of the witnesses and whether the marriage was performed under the authority of a licence or the publication of banns. This is not a legal record.

    The person who performed the marriage must forward the “Record of Solemnization of Marriage” and your marriage licence to the Office of the Registrar General for registration. Allow approximately 32 weeks from the date of marriage before applying for your marriage certificate

    Important Information
    The Office of the Registrar General will not rule on the validity of a marriage. Please contact a lawyer if you need to determine if your marriage is legal.
